RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY Cape Town 2003
Red Bull Music Academy
Cape Town 2003
Workshop Term I: November 2nd - 14th, 2003
Workshop Term II: November 23rd - December 05th, 2003
Application Phase: June 9th - July 25th, 2003
When it’s on, it’s on. It’s been called many things, but for those who had the opportunity to attend the Red Bull Music Academy, it has been an experience they’re unlikely to forget. For more than six years, the Academy has created a space where passion rules over profit, knowledge over kink, ideas over idiots and competence over cash. Where music rules.
Picture this: a room with 30 DJs and/or producers from around the world. Each character from a different background: be it musical, social or political. In the centre, the infamous couch and a sound-system. Over two terms of two weeks each, all the attention focussed on exploring myths, trading tricks, dissecting vibes and creating new ones.
It has happened before. In Berlin 1998/99, Dublin 2000, New York 2001, London and Sao Paulo 2002. Each a unique location with its own diverse blend of cultures and people. Those who make up the Academy whether they are lecturers, participants or part of the team have all come to make their two weeks special for themselves and their new peers. A place, were talent recognises talent.
The Mother City, Cape Town, South Africa is set to host the Red Bull Music Academy for 2003. Ten years after the fall of Apartheid, the country is now able to showcase its rich, diverse cultures to the world. Cape Town with its Afro-Euro influence has become a favourite with the international set frequenting the various beaches and soaking up the city’s nightlife. Kwaito, a downbeat fusion of pitched down New Jersey Deep House and local elements rules the airwaves. The world’s musical micro-genres blast out of scooters and passing cars. Projects such as B.O.P, Mandoza and the African Dope lads are all gaining international recognition. A musical revolution in the making.
So you want to be part of it? Here’s the procedure: All application packages sent to the Red Bull Music Academy between June 9th and July 25th, 2003 will be considered. The entries must consist of your music, be it a mix or a track, a completed questionnaire and current photos. All details can be found at amongst video streams and transcripts of past academies, a vibrant forum and extensive links to the musical sites of the world.
Sixty of the most promising applicants will be invited to the workshops in Cape Town. Flights and accommodation will be covered by the Red Bull Music Academy. All you have to do is make some time, either for Term I (November 2nd to 14th) or Term II (November 23rd to December 5th) and apply. If your musical ideas have not been rated by your surroundings as of yet – don’t worry. This selection is purely a meritocratic procedure. It’s totally about you. Your potential, your vision, your creativity. Your music.
By the first week of September, all applicants will be notified via email, no matter whether they were accepted or not. Judging from last years’ records, trying again for the next session will only increase your chances to get in. The only thing you have to do is download the application form from the website, fill it in, record some music, and…
See you at the Red Bull Music Academy Cape Town 2003?!
It’s on you.
