[MIX] Bailey - Intabeats Show (studiomix) @ 1Extra, London (06.09.2004)
Bailey - 1XTRA Metalheadz - Intabeats

Home town?
I was born and bred in South London in the areas that weren't so pleasant to be in at night.
I guess it's different when you live there and know everyone's faces though.
Who were some of your musical influences when you were younger?
When my mum cleaned the house from top to bottom on Sunday's she would always
play music to get her through it, which meant I was subjected to mass amounts of
music from the Motown era especially Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
Later on when I went to secondary school a classmate gave me a tape of early
Electro music to listen to. That's when my real interest in music started.
How would you describe your sound?
To me, my sound is about pounding beats and basslines but without losing the funk
or emotional flow of the music. Rough with the smooth.
When did you realise that being a DJ was something that you enjoyed and could earn a living with?
It wasn't until I became a Metalheadz resident that I realised that things could be more long term for me
in the scene rather than just something I supported as a fan.
What are the most important characteristics or talents that a DJ ought to have?
It's important to be nice to people but at the same time put your foot down when someone is trying
to take advantage of you. As a selector it's important to sound a little different from the rest.
There are hundreds of excellent tracks that get overlooked for the anthems.
What do you think of the internet and whether it has impact on Drum and Bass and the music industry?
I've yet to fully understand the full impact of the internet on drum and bass because there are so many angles to think
about. It's good in terms of unknown producers getting their music heard without having to rally around clubs meeting people.
Do you feel internet is a good medium to promote up and coming artists?
It's very good. Especially with people being able to promote via websites and forums.
If so you who are an up & coming artist for people to look out for?
Look out for Miracle! Very dangerous!!
Do you hold residencies with any clubs as well as your show on 1Xtra?
I rotate monthly at Swerve (Fabio's Liquid Funk Session) and am still a touring
DJ for Metalheadz wherever you see the nights pop up. I'm regularly at
Accelerated Culture and One Nation events too. I go to the USA 4 times a year and
fly to New Zealand and Australia once a year.

If you weren't a DJ, what you do think you would be doing now instead?
I'd probably be doing a regular job like an electrician which went to college to study for.
What's the most important lesson life has taught you so far?
It's too short to let ignorant people stop you from enjoying it.
Any other secret talents?
Not really. When I do get time to myself, I like to chill out and watch a film.
Just recuperate basically because I'm always out in the clubs so much.
What are your three desert Island discs?
Goldie's Timeless LP, Good time's 1 Compilation by Norman Jay & Joey Jay and a really good King Tubby's LP.
What are your three desert Island luxuries?
A nice, comfortable bed, a decent sounding stereo for my cds and a television.
Favorite movie?
Babylon.
Who in the world, living or dead, would you most like to play a game of "Twister" with?
My girl Rachel. It wouldn't be fun with anyone else to be honest.
Star sign?
I'm on the cusp of Taurus and Gemini.
Respect and shout outs: GARFIELD, MC FLUX, FABIO, INCH, DANNY B, FACE, RACHEL, MUM, DARRIN & JANE, SNT, KEMISTRY & STORM, DYLAN, GACHET, GOLDIE, MARK ONE -Without them, there would be no me I!
