DJ Rome Interview on Shadowbox 2008
hab hier n kleines interview für die czechien gemacht
enjoy
Hi Jay, what are you up to at this very moment? Packing your records for the trip to Prague?
YESSS man iam just sorting out the dubs i got in the last days for prague
Looking forward to the gig? What special do you have for us?
Oh yes defenetly, i love prague
Iam going to do a special set with differend stylez ......will start deep go into liquid than some good jumpup and at the end some harder stuff that i got recently...in fact there will be dnb music stylez for all headz in my mix
You DJed in Czech republic with Redeyes last year and it wasn't for the first time. Did you enjoy it?
Like i said before i love prague and all the attitude of the aestern europe countries....people are very euphoric and going proper mad...hehe... Thats what i like because iam like a mirror you know....if people enjoy i enjoy it too
Have you ever had time to see the Old Town and all those buties of Prague? What actually do you know about Prague or Czech republic? Good beer, beautiful girls, anything else?
Heheh well....what i know mainly are the clubs which is really a shame....One time we walked through the old city but you know we didnt visited any cultural monuments etc...so yeah i dont know a lot in particular...but what i know is that the city is beautiful...i defenetly love the architecture there man..big history
You move to Vienna last year...what brought you to do that? Is the scene different? Better? What is the best place to go to there?
Well i come from Frankfurt am main which is in the centre of Germany and which is mainly well known for techno and house music and not for dnb...so we dnb promoters allways had probs to do good parties there...so indeed vienna is very differend in focus dnb..the scene is really strong here, like every week there are about 5 dnb sessions... i mean i never saw such a big dnb comunity ever in europe maybe only in estonia or the uk. The best place to go out in Vienna is the Flex Club which is well known for one of the best soundsystems in europe. The parties over there are Beat It runned by rawfull and dkay on thursday with about 400-600 people and once a month on a saterday the Future Beatz runned by Matt, Rawfull & Meph with about 800 people. Besides of that there are even bigger parties at the Arena with about 2000 people 2 times a month. Those sessions are runned by Mainframe and Therpay. Of course there are plenty smaller dnb sessions every week. The best dnb club night is All Souled Out runned by Matt & Aziz at the Roxy Club pushing only pure liquid soundz.
What abou your label, Blu Saphir. We just had 7th release out, whats up next?
Oh yes iam very satisfied and happy with the blus007 by The Ego, Bungle, DJ Roots & Ill Esha which has been released last week. The next one will be a deep liquid track with a trippy vocal sample by Peyo & CloudNine from France and on the flip a Random Movement Remix of the same tune which has been masively played by DJ Marky already. The release will be aproxiamply in 2 months.
You started Digital version of Blu Saphir last year. Is that because you think vinyl might be in the end of its times or you just wanted to release more material, cos you think producers deserve it?
I just have to go with the time...its the future market and in fact there are soo many good dnb tunes which nobody pick up just because the artist is not famous enough and a vinyl release would be more risky for the label...so what i do is promoting brilliant necomer producers and then after building them up i wanna offer them a vinyl release deal if the tune is right..
And in fact i can experiment in signing like differend kind of tunes/stylez and take more risk because there aint any production costs/risks in the process .
So yeah for me i“Digital Blus“ is mainly like a platform to introduce necomer producers. To the market and then obviously sign them for the vinyl mother label „Blu Saphir“
Are you planning to release some of your production on Blu Saphir? Do you have some actually? I know you released a digital EP with Mad Vibes, anything else? How's the work in studio going anyway...
At the moment i didnt made any tune which would fit into the label so there is no tune planned for Blu Saphir...But i did some new tunes with Mad Vibes & Bassface Sascha 2 will be on Sidechain#10 and the other we did with Bassface Sascha is currentlky unsigned but indeed the best tune we ever did so thats why we are looking at the moment for a uk release for it. At the moment i live in Vienna and Mad Vibes studio is in Frankfurt so ist no so easy but i started to do some collabos here in Vienna with FoxRox and Geetox, but nothings really finished yet
What tools do you use for production?
I have both sequencer here cubase and logic express, i just use them to save my ideas and then go with it in the studio of mad vibes or here in vienna at the studio of foxrox or geetox.
And about DJing – you play mostly from Final Scratch, don't you, but still taking some records with you. What do you think about CDJs? I have never began to accept CDs as party material
Yeah sure i am still in love with vinyl that s why i still run a vinyl label and i also still go like every 2 weeks buying some plates aswell. But you know i get soo many tunes over aim that it would be impossible to cut them on dubs ( way tooo eyxpensive )...so thats why i bought finalscratch 2.0 in 2005. the great thing with that hardware is that you still can keep the vinyl feeling while mixing and this is very important for me. I used to mix with cds aswell but i didnt liked it as i lost the mixing feeling that i had with vinyl mixing before....and the thing what i dont like in cds is that you cant see the tune opticaly. And cds can get broken or stolen that cant happen with mp3s really
Which producer has come to your attention most recently? Any newcomer for 2008?
Oh there are a lot like Dave Owen and Sinistarr from the states DJ Clart from Singapore/London and Fa de Aurujo , Cybass & M Jazzy & DJ Romulo from Brazil which have all tunes signed on Digital Blus. Iam defenetly sure there will be big names this year.
But there are some more very talented up and comming artists comming through like the Czech producer Smote, and the Slowak producers Decem & L Plus. Also Concept & Shnek, Geetox, Camo & Krooked and Tenchu from Austria, Thought from Bulgaria, Naibu from France, Lenzman from Holland, Blocks, Insight & Cabbie from the UK, Soulgrifter from Germany, Broken Eye & Enei from Russia and Undersound from Wales. Those people do differend stylez of dnb but they do all quality. So watch out for these names
On Blu Saphir you release liquid funk, on parties you play party stuff but in our Bag Fillers you said your top 5 tunes are those old time classics. Why's that? Do you like to come in your mind to the old days? Are you one of those people who say it will never be the same asi in 90s?
I still dont like this thinking of stylez..like i play only this i play only that...for me ist still all one music „Drum and Bass“ and i really like to play all in my sets as i feel so many stylez...and for the old school collection these are my all time faves siince ive started to mix in 96 and i still love to tease them in my mixes. They are good souvenirs for me and still doing very well after all these years ...they are defenetly timeless dancefloor tunes..
Ok, thanks for the interview and see you on friday!
