JACKY MURDA
CHOPSTICK DUBPLATE | MURDATUNE | KING KONG SOUND | NU-URBANMUSIC.CO.UK
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jack moved around a lot during his childhood, as his father was in the Navy. At age 11 he started playing drums in the school band and started collecting records around 1982, starting mostly with used old classic rock and soul, hardcore punk,new-wave, and some early electronic stuff like kraftwerk. ”I used to make these pause-mix-tapes and show up to house parties and pull out the other guys tape and do a rocker's style takeover”. Getting his first pair of tech 12's around 1987, while living in boston he really started gettin into beatmixin, scratchin', remixin stuff, collecting rap and rnb records , as well as some early house and freestyle, “cuz there really wasnt too much of a seperation between all the styles back then”. In 1989 he got his first sampler : an akai s900, and a mixing board and his first mac : a mac IIx. A year later an s1000 followed, with a nice 2" 16 track reel-to-reel, and a DDA q-series analog console the size of a battleship. “I used to record these crappy bands around my way, messin around with mixin and effects and stuff. after a while i moved up in montreal in 94, and opened up shop up therewith a 24 trk digital studio based around tascam da-88's, old fashioned 8-track digital recorders using 8mm video cass to record 8 trk at a time, and syncin em all up to the mac so i could have samples playin with my live tracks”. In montreal he really started to produce his own tunes on a level “where they actually started to sound ok, and i could get some rapers to come and spit on the beetz” Playin more in clubs as a hiphop dj, he decided that i wanted to be able to play his tunes when performing. At the time there was no alternative to vinyl, and the cdj's at the time “were beyond whack.” So in 1997 he started looking for a lathe to cut tunes on dub, to play them in the club the day he finished a mix. In 1998 he brought up a machine from Miami, florida, started rebuilding it, and cutting dubs. the same year, someone stole most of his club records out of his residence, and he started playing drum and bass. Over the next few years he improved the system, updating the pitch computer, having a custom cutterhead built, and gradually adding to the system until he could really cut masters on the beast. “I started voicing dubs on dnb in 98, usually on others peoples tunes, and by 2000 i was voicing on my own jungle riddims i started twisting up..around that time i started my first record label: king kong sound.” Hangin out and playin with Krinjah, he decided to put out his first record "the return", which he cut and distributed. He moved back the US east coast in 2001, setting up shop in crown heights, Brooklyn and in 2002, started releasing tunes under the name chopstick dubplate, the same name as the studio. By the time he moved to the nicer fort greene area in 2003 he had written and voiced around a hundred dubs, and was starting to play more shows with only his own material on the decks, all dubs he had arranged, recorded, mastered and cut himself. The same year he had his first chopstick tour in europe, and in 2005 moved across the pond. In dec 2006 he sold the studio and began really concentrating on developing and improving his sound, working on tunes and playin shows around europe. Discovering the serato system, promptly becoming addicted, he now was able to carry ALL his tunes wherever he performed. In 2006 he teamed up with nu-urban distribution in the UK to put out his entire back-catalog.
In his own words: "i make music and put it out on a little label called "chopstick dubplate" you can listen and get mp3s here: you can get vinyls,cd's, and mp3's here: Chopstick vinyls started out with Terry Ganzie's "Junglist Outlaw", and Pinchers' junglist medley on "Junglist Bandelero"... followed by more 10 inches featuring man like General Pecos "Pecos Teng", Barry Brown's " Chop Far East", Tuffist, Zanadu, Mr. Mutton and a new artist Bass Nacho outta Miami on the track "Run Up Inna Dat". Later on Chopstick twisted up the classic Johnny Osbourne party favorite "BudyBye"... Followed by a dubbier epic track "Cowboy Run" featuring Nacho again on some far west vibes, with Jacky's "Spanish Horns Version" on the flip.. and up and coming - "Roadblock Tonight" featuring Fragga Ranks for our 10th vinyl release. All our releases are voiced specially for us in Kingston or New York following our strict D.I.Y. ethic... everything is written, arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered in-house."
