Cyall of Barcode Recordings has been giving tunes away for free. Nothing too special, right... except that he's giving the people a choice, and asking them to VOTE on the tunes in question. Sounds cool, right? The most recent MP3 that was released was a remix of Donny's "Search & Destroy" by the Elektrostal, Russia's own Lucio De Rimanez. Lucio has been listening to DnB for a while, first picking up on acts like Technical Itch, and that love of darker, colder Drum & Bass, paired with the environment he’s grown up in, has helped shape the sound of his you hear today. In an interesting twist, Cyall asked the members of the Barcode Recording Facebook Fanpage to submit questions for Lucio; the best questions were then answered by Lucio, and are what you see before you. Enjoy!

W Jeff Campsey: Seems like there are a number of incredibly talented DnB producers coming out of Russia. How do you think where you live has influenced you in your music?

Lucio De Rimanez: Definitely - Russia is an incredible country with many interesting and talented people. However, I think my parents (rather than my location) have had a greater influence on my music and creativity; my father plays drums and my mother was a professional singer.

Kia 'Tabasco' Tasbihgou: How long were you producing before you decided to send demos to labels?

Lucio De Rimanez: I started writing music in 2002 and once they sounded of a good quality, I decided to submit them to be signed. The first label I sent a track to was Algorythm. I sent Justin [Counterstrike] "Inside" and he told me that the idea was good, but the mixdown needed a lot of work. Justin gave me good and straightforward advice, in order for the tracks to be at the same audio level as other releases already on vinyl.

Jonathan Bosch: When you start making a track do you have a particular breakbeat pattern already lined up in you head, or do you just start a new project and let the beats flow as an inspiration of the moment?

Lucio De Rimanez: It depends - sometimes an idea arises somewhere away from the computer, and I try to remember it. Other times I simply start to experiment and something turns out. But often the idea that started off in my head changes into something better in the process of working on it. In general, like many producers, I dream about a device that is able to record music in .WAV directly from your thoughts :D

Sorpent Visad: What types of new software or hardware had you used on this last release? Why?

Lucio De Rimanez: I use my notebook, an Ableton Live sequencer and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones. I use WAVES plug-ins, Native Instruments VSTs, Ohmforce and built-in live instruments, along with various sound samples. Ableton Live is a great programme that is very convenient for quick work. I am very pleased with it, as it is also convenient to mix tracks with. Both Filthcasts (005 and 013) were done using Ableton.

Sam Wood: What are your thoughts on being likened to producers such as Current Value? Is this a great honour for you?

Lucio De Rimanez: Yes, of course it pleases me, however, I don't like it when people say my music is similar to Current Value. We are simply working in a similar musical direction and genre, but our ideas and music are quite different.

Nick White: You've got some really creative names for your tracks. How do you come up with something like "Breath Of Steel"?

Lucio De Rimanez: Naming tracks is always a problem. Most often the names are just an association to the sound or a particular sample that gives me an idea. I don't remember why I chose the name "Breath of Steel".

Sam Wood: When you're playing out do you use vinyl, CD or digital? And why?

Lucio De Rimanez: I use CD because it's more interesting than a laptop, as it's more live and interactive. And also it's comfortable - you just need to bring a little CD bag the party. I don't use vinyl, because I can't play my latest tracks this way.

Benjamin Pena: What advice would you give to an aspiring bedroom producer?

Lucio De Rimanez: I advise them to experiment more and always search for something new in the sound and also to pay greater attention to sound quality. It is a good idea to read as much information on the web about sound - there is lots out there and it is easy to find. Send your demos via Soundcloud, listen to feedback from labels and other producers. What works on headphones might not work at a party, so it is important when making music to imagine yourself on the dancefloor listening to it. Create a groove that is enjoyable to listen to and that works on the dancefloor. There is no rush to get signed to labels, to focus on the music is best.

Skatty Lee: Do you have any collabs lined up for 2010?

Lucio De Rimanez: In 2009 I did a collab with Cooh entitled "Each of Us", which was released on his PRSPCT Recordings' Sleepwalkers EP. I've completed "Kingdom of Bugs" with Dereck, which is due for release on Future Sickness in 2010. Other than that, I would like to do collaborations with Donny, Cooh and Limewax. It would be cool to make a big collab like Donny, Limewax , Current Value, Cooh & Lucio De Rimanez - Big Tune (Barcode dubplate) :D

Piotr Chańko: Beer or vodka?

Lucio De Rimanez: Double cognac please
