Unicast 003: Cooh
UNICAST 003: COOH
DOA: Thanks for taking the time out to chat with us. We read that you'd been playing the guitar for a band at the age of 16, about two years prior to you working on electronic music. Had you been listening to electronic music before you started creating it, and what drew you to want to start making music electronically, as opposed to playing guitar and such?
Cooh: I had huge collection of metal and industrial tapes at home, so I was listening to a lot of bands by that time and I was interested in all sorts of heavy music, that why I learned to play guitar and made my own band with my friends. Later on, I discovered the pure electronic sound with Aphex Twin, The Panacea and Alec Empire and I wanted to start experimenting with this music, too, and to see if I can mix the heavy sounds from my band into the computer.
DOA: What is it about DnB that excites you?
Cooh: On one side it's the way I can release my demons with the hard sounds, and on another side it's the DnB tempo and the way it makes me move faster and think out of the box.
DOA: We know you're in Bulgaria – is it difficult to find acceptance within the worldwide DnB scene being from Bulgaria?
Cooh: It's not as easy as if I was from England, but I never had problems with that. It's all about what you do, not where you are from.
DOA: What was it like getting your first tune signed?
Cooh: It was really exciting, as I was sure my music is on the right way, but I needed to prove it and that happened with my first tune been signed. That was the point when I pushed myself harder to do more music and keep the good work.
DOA: Do you have any favorite tunes from your catalog of releases?
Cooh: Yes, I've got few tracks that were like milestone moments for my career, and also others that helped me to show my experimental ideas to the DnB scene, so I got a lot of favorite tunes from my released material.
DOA: You've been working on this Balkansky project, which we heard a bit about in our chat with Joanna Syze. Can you break down how Balkansky started, any goals you have with that project, and what we can expect to hear from you as Balkansky?
Cooh: My Balkansky project started as a side project, gathering all my non-DnB ideas and also explaining a bit of my nationality and where I come from. The biggest goal so far was the Kuker album I did with the producer Ivo Christov and the kaval flute virtuoso Theodosii Spassov. The music from the album is a mix of Bulgarian folk music with modern beats and sounds. Balkansky is also the name I use for my dubstep tunes and I already had few vinyl releases for Subtract, Rocstar and forthcoming releases for Ad Noiseam, Rottun and Ohm Resistance. I am currently working on the new Balkansky album featuring Theodosii Spassov again, and I hope it can get released by the end of 2011.
DOA: Speaking of future releases, what do you have on the horizon Drum & Bass-wise?
Cooh: Drum & Bass-wise, I've got my "Naglfar" tune with Current Value for Position Chrome scheduled for release in early January, then my track "Gerdan" will be released on Union Recordings in January as well. Some more releases are planned to get out in the beginning of the new year like my remix of The Sect's "Turrican" on Perkussive, my tracks "Helmet" and "Silver Spoon" on Habit and the long awaited "Moscow" and "Vtakt" have to see their release in 2011, too.
DOA: You cooked up a special Unicast that we're helping promote. Break down what the Dogs can expect from you within this mix?
Cooh: I made the podcast with some of my latest tracks and some of my favorite stuff from other producers. It starts with an air raid test I recorded in Sofia and then my first track on Union, "Gerdan". Later on the mix goes in between hardcore and techno DnB, but also some halfstep and more experimental tracks are in the mix too.
DOA: Any plans for NYE2011, either as a DJ or performer or just enjoying the festivities?
Cooh: I will enjoy my time chilling out with my girl and some friends at some home party. I had to play every year on the NYE for the last 8 years, so I decided to spend this one relaxing
DOA: Any shouts before we get into this?
Cooh: Enjoy the music and release your demons with my beats !
