Well, it’s been 5 years in the making, and having finally reached their landmark 30th release OUTBREAK RECORDS have excelled themselves with this long awaited debut album.
THE BIOLOGICAL WARFARE LP lands in record shops in the form of two neat double packs and a darkside double CD. The first EP ‘GENESIS’ consists of four new tracks, and the second, ‘REBIRTH’, released a month later, is four remixed Outbreak classics. As you would expect this whole project epitomises what Outbreak has come to stand for; dark, funk infused, dance floor driven beats. Disc One of the CD contains not only the eight album tracks but a selection of other Outbreak bits selected and mixed by new bad kids on the block RESONANT EVIL, who have been making a stir all over Drum & Bass lately, not least with their nasty little offering on the GENESIS EP ‘BLACK ZODIAC’. Disc two is unmixed. The CD ONLY will contain an exclusive VIP of RESONANT EVIL’S BUNKER BUSTER thrown in for good measure! All in all, this album is a tidy little set of beats.
LOXY & VERSE starts things up on the GENESIS EP with ‘NORTH STAR’. VERSE is a familiar voice on the MC circuit and up till now has been less well known for his production skills. Well, all that is about to change with this excellent dark bass heavy tune, which combines LOXY’S signature sound with VERSE’S fresh input. FUTURE PROPHECIES ‘VOICE OF LONELINESS’ at first seems a direct contrast to the A side, with its trancey opening synths, but it presently breaks down into a suitable reecy frenzy. ‘BLACK ZODIAC’ is, as mentioned above, the usual sick RESONANT EVIL offering, an onslaught of sound with plenty going on. Finally South African newcomer COUNTERSTRIKE’S round off the EP with ‘CANT LET GO’. This is an amazing tune. A dark rocky vocal keeps the track in vogue with current trends; while fierce and funky basslines make sure it’s gonna kill on the dance floor! This tune has been getting a lot of support on the circuit recently so it won’t be long before it sneaks into a DJ set near you!!
‘REBIRTH’ (or the Remix EP) is even sicker than ‘GENESIS’. TECH ITCH’S remix of FAITH IN CHAOS’ ‘POSSESION’ is currently going down very well in Andy C’s sets, which is just what you’d expect of such a twisted and totally f****d up track! RAIDEN adds his ‘delicate’ touch to proceedings mashing up RESONANT EVIL’S ‘WRENCH’ into something dark and rolling, much like the original, but with RAIDEN’S evil touch.... FRICTION & NU BALANCE gives their side a touch of bounce with their version of DYLAN & B-KEYS ‘FREAK IT’. Still maintaining the original dirty b-line this remix has a strong jump up feel to it that actually makes for a refreshing break after the onslaught of the previous two tracks! Finally the track I love the most DYLAN & MASON’S disgusting reworking of DYLAN & DAMAGES ‘BASS KICK’... Everyone will have a favourite and this is mine!! It’s sick, it’s bad, and it’s dirty… You’ll just have to listen for confirmation!
