Subdivision / Machine Code - Interview

Subdivision

Tell us about Subdivision, when did subdivision begin and who’s behind it?

Subdivision is a project that I have been building over the years, it was always a concept of mine to push all things techno or machine based music whether it be dnb or techno… People think that dub step and dnb is something new to us but I was doing dub before techno and was writing techno based dnb many years ago under wellbalanced machine some tracks can be found on line.

I think stomach acid is there that was written early 2000 but not released till much later on my techno label unknown forces..

Subdivision includes subsistenz, subtrakt e subviolenz, which are the main differences among these labels?

Subsistenz – Rolling techno dnb

Subtrakt – Monsta machine dub & home of 1/4 step

Subviolenz – All things dirty will be a mixed bag from me and Tim on this,

Which requirements should have a producer to release on these labels?

There own style its Simple, some talent and originality.

Who are your favorite producers at the moment?

Nanotek, Noiz, Excision, King Cannibal, Cooh, Culprate ..

What do you have coming out soon?

Other than the machine code album environments we have some vs coming up with Limewax – and the sect . Our reworks and mixes of Sensers end of the world show to come, which has led us to working with Nick from Senser on a release we are putting together with Coppa for Rocksta .. A single on Subtrakt 08 with Broken Note `´. Along with working on the new tracks for our Nord live and Dnb album.

Last but not least the Underhill album silent siren is also finished and we hope will be out soon !!

Machine Code

Hi guys, tell us about yourselves, why Machine Code? How did you come up with this name?

It was better than the other ideas…

Where are you from? What is your musical background?

I’m from London originally and Tim is from Berlin – We both have similar music backgrounds when it comes to dance (electronic music) both coming from the love of techno from the early 90s.

How and when did you start this project together?

I moved to Berlin about 2 years ago after a stint in Austria and built a studio in the west side of Berlin… me and Tim had spoken prior to this over the dvk rmxs on subsistenz and decided to hook up over a curry within the 1st few weeks of me being there ..

We never really intended to do a project to start with but after a few months of meeting up and doing some tracks, the 1st being the spars land ep we seemed to have too much material for it just to be a a one off studio project so Machine Code was born …

Can you tell us a bit about your studio set up? How do your tracks start in the studio? Do you usually work together on each single tune?

The studio set up is a mixture of hardware and software I suppose built around our Nord synths . Something that we use allot to start running with ideas…

Tracks can be started either by Tim or myself but we always work on the tracks together in the studio – like the live it will only ever be done by the 2 of us…

Your first LP “environments” is forthcoming on subtrakt, tell us more about it..

Environments is a mix bag hence the title – from dub step to ¼-step to techno the album really highlights what the project machine code is all about - coming together of minds a symbiosis of ideas that are not focused on one genre. Just about music and what comes naturally when we work together as MC… The cd will also feature some artists we are really feeling at the min as well … Should have some naughty rmxs on there…

New technologies had provided a lot of electronic music on the internet a lot of big tunes and a lot of shit too, what do you think about that? Suggest something to the newcomers

I think you summed it up in your question… There is allot of great stuff coming from the fact that all you really need now is a laptop to create tracks (wish that was the case when we started) but there is also allot of tripe flooding the internet that a few years ago would have had some quality control by the labels… All that aside it’s not really my place to judge – if some people think it’s great then all good for them you don’t have to listen to it …

As for suggesting something to newcomers from a label perspective I would say always do something naturally even if it doesn’t sound like you fav producer at the moment – most of the so called elite is there because they have carved out a sound that is their own. We receive 100s of demos that are carbon copies of the producers of the moment and to be honest what is the point of a label releasing that if they already have the original artist. Originality is the key for me…

On the internet we can find even a lot of “free music”, pirate websites providing everything you want totally free, do you agree with the idea that a product of the human mind is property of the human kind or of the artist who generate that? Do you agree with free music distribution? Do you think that the dj/producer should earn money from productions, shows or both of them?

Everything we create is a product of the human mind, perception and creation of anything weather it’s a product, s with the social systems that we live in… I live in a system of another man’s ideal where his ideological product of western living is to comply with a corporate structure where everything I touch or see will cost me something.

The day I wake up in an utopian paradise where everything is free and there is no need for money to live then yeah sure – have my music for free and let us enjoy each other’s lovely creations and hug trees till the cows come home ..

This doesn’t mean that it’s all about the money – it’s not. And I have put more into the music than I have ever got back… But there is no way that I could have promoted in some ways inspired or helped others to realize their ideals without something coming back to fund the concepts that we have and want to keep pushing ..

In this world an artist has to reach and maintain – if not increase – a certain “market value” surely being an expression of his will to communicate with the outside world combined with his talent and abilities.

We also see making music as a friendly competition a play of being inspired by and inspire others.

What do you think about this new wave of electronic music coming from east Europe?

Do you think that those famous new technologies which we talked before are helping in that? How?

New wave it feels like the east has been pounding out tracks for a long time now. There is some great stuff coming from the east the more the merrier it’s a global scene. For sure modern technologies have helped but also the fact the eastern sector is more connected and open in Western Europe has played a big part to it I’m sure.

Just my personal curiosity…what happened to “dying punks”? Why did this project die so fast?

The Dying Punks came from a moment in time that was fitting to what Chris (raiden) & I was feeling back then. There was nothing sordid about the finish of the project Chris was going one way with his sounds and I wanted to explore more the machine techno sounds in dnb and dubstep that I don’t think as yet has reached its full potential - so the Dp’s in true punk style came destroyed and died ..

What do you think about the new direction of Raiden’s music? And what about Offkey?

Raiden is very good and focused in his vision of what he wants for his labels and personal style of music. There is not many people that can do what he does and work scenes and create them in his own mould. I have much respect for people that can succeed in their own vision it takes allot of time and energy to follow your own flight… He knows what he is doing whether or not I get it is irrelevant – the quality is there in what he has put together for that style and will continue to create and gather support from past and future fans I’m sure…
