FREAKY FLOW ( CANADA )
first time in austria
One of the most recognized DJs in Toronto, North America's drum'n'bass mecca, Freaky Flow began extending his reach in the late '90s, signing an album deal with Moonshine and touring relentlessly. By the early 2000s, his efforts paid large dividends: he had become one of North America's top drum'n'bass DJs, alongside other luminaries such as Dieselboy and AK1200. Furthermore, Freaky Flow's fame also elevated MC Flipside's status, the DJ's longtime exclusive MC.
Though born in Philadelphia, Freaky Flow moved to Toronto at a young age. There he took an interest in hip-hop, culminating in his decision to begin DJing. It wasn't long before he was cutting and scratching, in addition to mixing records. Then, once drum'n'bass began making its way from England to North America, Freaky Flow changed his style, excited by the possibilities of using his DJing skills -- honed from years of cutting, scratching, and mixing hip-hop -- to spin drum'n'bass. It also helped that Toronto became North America's drum'n'bass mecca, adopting the style as its own just as Detroit had done with techno, Chicago with house, and New York with garage-house.
By the late '90s, Freaky Flow was one of Toronto's most championed drum'n'bass DJs, standing out from the crowd not only because of his already-honed skills but also because of MC Flipside, who never failed to accompany the DJ during his many live performances. In addition to DJing, Freaky Flow also began producing tracks in the mid- to late '90s, working for Placebo Recordings (distributed by Stickman Records). His first nationally distributed mix album, Obscene Underground (1999), took him to the next level. Soon Freaky Flow was no longer confined to the lively Toronto scene; drum'n'bass fans around the world were now able to hear his obvious talents. The remarkable success of Obscene Underground led to a multiple-album deal with Moonshine, one of North America's leading -- if not North America's leading -- dance label. Freaky Flow's partnership with Moonshine opened yet more doors for the Toronto DJ, who was internationally recognized at this point.
MC Flipside ( CANADA )
Moonshine Music, TrustTheDJ / Toronto, Canada
MC Flipside began reciting rhymes prior to birth, while still in his mother’s womb. Thus, hip-hop caught his attention at an early age. Flipside struggled not to interrupt the rap songs, but found that no matter how hard he attempted to restrain himself, he could not; he was a microphone fiend - plain and simple.
During high school, Flipside became enveloped by all facets of electronic music, ranging from techno to house to breakbeat to jungle. The latter he found he could speak over best, as it was the closest in speed and pace to the hip-hop that he had originally fallen in love with. Flipside first met his counterpart, Freaky Flow, in '94; each respected the other’s work and a bond was formed that, in '96, would result in a merger with The Stickmen and the imminent birth of Placebo Recordings. But, to the dismay of many, Placebo Recordings’ release schedule came to an abrupt halt at the end of ‘98. For Freaky Flow was busy with other endeavours, while Flipside was busy pursuing a highly prosperous career in radio, a trade for which he had earned a college diploma just a few years earlier.
Flip also hosted and produced the successful weekly radio show, “Trippin’,” which aired late every Saturday night on Energy Radio 107.9 FM (with over 600,000 weekly listeners across Ontario and western New York). Flipside’s show featured internationally acclaimed guests like Josh Wink, Nigel Richards, King Britt, M.C. G.Q., Swan-E, Johnny L., Keoki, and Roger Sanchez, just to name a few. Television is no stranger to Flip either, for he has appeared repeatedly on Canada’s live dance music show, “Electric Circus”, on City TV. His three mix compilation CD’s (on Stickman/Popular), which share the same name as his radio show, have enjoyed smashing success throughout his home country.
As a performer, Flipside travels with Freaky Flow on a regular basis, dominating the microphone wherever he goes. This praised MC/DJ lethal combination frequents major events throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, and most recently Hong Kong.
Flippy, referred to as such by his friends, has already recorded vocals for numerous house cuts. Additionally, listeners can hear him making cameo appearances on most of Freaky Flow’s mixed material, including the acclaimed “Obscene Underground – Volume 1” compilation, which has sold nearly 20,000 units in Canada alone. Currently busy in the studio, Flipside, in collaboration with acclaimed producer Paranoid Jack, has already released some vicious vinyl on the Stickman, Aquarius, and Jinxx imprints, under the alias ‘Redline’.
This aside, Flip’s main focus is still rockin’ the microphone. Such is why Flipside and Freaky Flow have quickly become (arguably) the most sought after North American drum ‘n’ bass contingent in the world. With such impeccable beats and rhymes that the two project, it’s no wonder why!
The Green Man
The Green Man (TGM) is Heiner Kruse from Cologne. He is DJ and Producer focussed on Drum & Bass Music as well as founder of Basswerk Records and Junglegrowers, having released an album on Combination Records ("You Decide") and a Double CD Compilation on Basswerk ("Sessions #2") in 2003. As a DJ he goes for Ups and Downs within D&B DJ-Sets, mixing Neurofunk with Dub & Souljungle. His productions do have a typical Green man Sound, which is usually deep, optimistic and a little bit melancholical too - but also varies in hardness intensities between spacy chillers ("Chicks (with Klute)", "Nu wheels") to very hard and dark ravetunes ("Truth", "Technik"). His most played anthemns were Infinity, Illegal, Damn Wire and Ragtime - and his current unreleased hit is called Easy (feat. MC Chevy & Dragoon). Especially Infinity reached the Germans Club Charts No.1 Position for a few weeks and was released in several versions on different labels. His contact is heiner@basswerk.de, and you’ll find all links on thegreenman.de.
Cheetah
cheetah he is doing the basswerk parties from day one and now also runs the label, too. m. laszlo was responsible for the cover-paintings of basswerk 1-10 and has recently joined as "taxidriver" with the trained saxophonist and musician michael rieck for the taxidriver project. with over 20 years of dj experience, cheetahs musical background is extremely wide. his stories of ancient involvements in bands like “peniskrem” or "blöd tapir", especially playing drums, are legendary. one recognizable element in his dj and producer works is a quite dubby style of drum & bass. “toytonic” is taxidrivers first track, followed by “give it up”, “dub yo” and “baba bass” - and there is a lot of fresh and innovative stuff in the work, as they move from total weirdos to peaceful chillers.
