Interview:
Machine Code Interview (by Wetworks)
+ Q: How did you two meet?
CV: We met in Berlin in April 2008. I had heard about the Dying Punks Project from Raiden consisting of Raiden himself and Dean Rodell at the time and I was curious. Dean founded the Subdivision Studio in Berlin and so we meet there shortly after he had moved to the city. We are still are meeting for studio sessions on a regular basis there for all the projects we are envolved in..
DR: The first actual meet was in an Indian restaurant - CV´s choice which is the perfect foot to get off with me so the signs were good from the off ... And it only cost 2.25 each so was even better ...
+ Q: Coming from two separate musical backgrounds - how do you feel this has affected your co-productions?
CV: Actually our musical backgrounds might have been well different in terms of technical and instumental education but speaking of making electronic music we both are originated in techno music - me (Tim) starting to produce and releasing Drum and Bass in 1997 and Dean outputting Techno from around the same time... So coming from two sides doesnt effect us in a negative way at all - we have the same feel and ideas for tracks to be honest.
+ Q: I'd also like to know at what point did you decide to make music together?
CV + DR: After a few studio sessions, the vibe was good and the ideas flowed without really any effort what so ever so we just carried on and haven´t stopped, taking on more projects and venturing into other sounds and directions. So no time exactly everything is pretty natural and as relaxed as can be..
+ Q: When going into the studio, do your differentiating musical backgrounds conflict at any point?
CV: It may sound strange but there are no conflicts at all.
DR: Only over Burger King runs...
+ Q: Does what sounds right to one translate differently to another?
CV: Well I (Tim) am very quick and flexible in terms of music production and since our musical intent meets in so many points it is an easy thing to get something going no matter who starts with an idea.
DR: Translation is never an issue in the studio Tim is always right hehe Nah we really like the same thing i cant remember once were we started something again or changed major parts of a track it is what it is and it always works.. For us anyways..
+ Q: Dean, what were you listening that attracted you towards this tech-dnb genre?
DR: I met Chris (Raiden) in Austria at a mates house and we were both keen on each others sound the more Chris sent at the time the more i got into it .. It reminded me of the freedoms and the style of the techno me and Glenn Wilson used to do but a little faster. But that freedom and energy is there for me.
+ Q: Same for Tim, what attracts you to techno and were you guys into the others music prior to meeting?
CV: Since i come from techno like stated above - this style of dnb was a natural progression, in a way a sort of coming back to my roots. Ive always kept an eye on the techno scene the love for deep chunky machine grooves that your head locks into will always be there for me.
+ Q: What software do you both use, does that play into youre musical compatability?
CV: It doesn't really matter what we use but Ableton Live seems to be the quickest tool to us rounded up by a bit of rewired Reason. Dean comes up with a lot of ideas - and almost finished tracks for MC that allow me to add my engineering background to the frame, Feeding Dean with new ways of enginering is also helping towards the time and musical compatability..
DR: We are both pretty sharp on most Daws – the latest that Cooh and Tim have got me into is Reason a handy tool that i couldnt live without now.. For me that in hand with Ableton is more than enough and makes the combatibiltiy in the studio very fast and easy for both of now. Not that Ableton doesnt have its moments to slow us up. There is still a lot of issues that you have to deal with in Ableton even basic functions u have to be carful of what it´s doing to your sound. But for vibe u cant beat it...
+ Q: Drugs or alcohol or neither when writing?
CV: We dont drink and drive - if you know what that means - lol
A clear head is favorised because we dont want to "end up somewhere" by accident without actually knowing how we got there. It is definitely more dedicatedly using our skills to transform the ideas as quick as possible - before they're gone.
DR: If we have finished working we go crazy on a bottle of red wine and some Columbo – slippers and a smoking pipe vibe... As the music reflects hehe
+ Q: In a perfect world what do you think techno could teach dnb and vice versa?
DR: Mmm difficult question really .. For me the only things that i can see is that in dnb people embrace new people and are always looking for new sounds and producers to keep things fresh – sure there is an elite but i see more chances in dnb for people to have their tracks played by more established dj artists ... Where in Techno most not all still look towards a lot of the scenes main producers for tracks. Which is a shame and probably and element to why techno stays very closed in my eyes.
And for dnb it could maybe embrace the ideas of new technologies especially in the live sense – this in techno is standard to see live pa ´s etc but in dnb its not accepted as much at the min but it is changing. I do understand that the backgrounds are differnt in the way that dnb has always been more of a dubplate culture and vinyl based. But there is a lot of scope live for producers these days and is a lot more live and on the fly than it has ever been.
+ Q: Do you find when working together that you would like to make more than just tech dnb
CV+DR: Actually we do a lot of different things apart from Tech DNB....: "Quarter Step" being a form of "By - 4 Divided - DNB" with a new vibe that will be highlighted on the MachineCode album. Both are really into Dubstep elements these days this was somthing we done before even Machine Code was thought of..We have done some Techno as well which we plan to output really soon. Anything can happen in the studio maybe machine code rnb soon hehe..
+ Q: Will we ever hear a Dean Rodell tech dnb release solo?
DR: I have done some dnb rmxs Techno Prisiners by Temper D and a rmx for Dark Asylum Replicator that can be heard on the Machine Code Subcast 3 ( ) Once I´ve finished the album for machine code and rounded up the Underhill Album that is the next thing on the list a D-Rodell dnb release..
+ Q: Will we see a current value release solo techno?
CV: Already out there --- Curve146....)))))
+ Q: Are there groupies in tech dnb, because they arent in techno?
CV: You can find groupies in the east and Russia I think.
DR: Other than u m8 i have none L oh and ya mar hehe
+ Q: Do u feel in the scene so to speak because of the access to technology that there is less quality control or is this an issue that spans accross genres?
CV: To define quality in these days is quite difficult meaning that there is so much rubbish that's supposed to be great...
It simply can be described as "natural selection" - a question of "like and dislike". Of course we know what quality means to us and we will make sure to set the limit the highest possible!
DR: For me it´s what CV says but the access is a good thing as well every now and then there are people that really want to create music coming through – not copying it but making it their own .. But there is a lot of shit out there now but like anything horses for corses – i mean there are people out there that like eating shit so it´s no surprise that some like listening to it as well---
+ Q: Do you both agree that American Football is far superior to Futbol?
Lets not go there – u know what the aswer is – who wants to pay to watch men throw an egg about in padded suits – I can do that at my local mental asylum.
+ Q: Will we see the two of you on tour soon?
Yeah for sure the winter 2009 we will be out and about for sure ...
