I see both sides, though I do think a few people are completely missing the point. Its not that anyone's bitter, I'm aware most awards shows are motive ridden and rarely represent whatever the awards are actually for in any shape or form, but I suppose its just disappointing, not for us personally but of the scene and mentality for some people and their view of drum and bass and refusal to see any other side to it then their own. Its not just dark stuff left out, so it is shitting on pretty much 80% of the scene really, at least three quarters. To, I guess, really believe darker styles, techy, liquid, internationals, people who are shaping and pushing this scene, people with more events, more bookings, more releases (good ones), sold out tours, have no place in this scene or are not drum and bass somehow or a huge part of it... It was one thing maybe 5 years ago when you had to look to find these people, but most are hardly so niche they are unheard of. Its just not like that anymore, regardless of personal tastes, anyone who knows anything about this scene as a whole knows that, so regardless of smart ass remarks LOL and cute sarcasm etc lol we can stop fakin the funk about that. So its an actual effort to make it look so and avoid these people being mentioned.
This is exactly the reason why we have liquid, and jump up, and neuro, and dark, all separated and no more events with diversity, and everything has to be so pigeon holed and always one sided right now from all sides of the spectrum. Magazines have a "dark" issue or "liquid" issue, and its bullshit really and shouldnt even be necessary! We were pretty much forced to start up Therapy because of this fact, not to separate ourselves, but we had to - because then, as it is now, it has been a consistent effort, really solely from some people or establishments in the UK, to exclude those who do not conform to one standard of sound, look, act, behaviour, etc, even though that is the death of art, or music or anything creative. I don't know why just doing what you love and what comes naturally without putting down anyone else, something nowhere near as financially premeditated as all trying to sound like the one breakthough mainstream act, or changing your style to suit what the current trend is, has put sooo many knickers in twists and kept them there for years, its really baffling. I expect more from underground music, that's all. Its like no one has any fucking integrity anymore, and thats just bloody depressing, as everything we do is to make things better, and push what we love and what we think we can do, and do the best we can, and to not put others down in doing so. We do our own thing, but be damn sure if I ran a Awards show or Magazine or Drum and Bass festival, for a whole genre of music, I would do my homework.
UAF does this superbly and the organisers run part of Echo Location, but the festival is "Drum and Bass" and they represent everyone from DBridge to Dylan to TC..so plenty of other countries and people do it, its a shame the UK is still so stuck in a rut. This doesn't actually make the scene stronger!! Drum and Bass is not Hollywood movies or even movies in general, as there are tons and tons of movies and genre's of them...we have like 4 subgenre's, that can mesh into each other anyways, so we cannot compare it with David Lynch versus, say, Transformers or The Sex in the City movie. In most countries, my artists are booked just as much, if not more then jump up and liquid counterparts (depending on the country, they still have Germany lol), and we get just as big turn outs, and just as many successful, regular events, so to act like we are underdogs of this scene still is just getting old now and really quite out of touch with the reality of what is happening Worldwide and in 80% of the scene, which is no longer based soley in the UK by any means, sorry but get over it, its not. And that is a good thing, its grown into a Worldwide music scene and thats beautiful. Just we can't be called a conglomerate one minute and treated like non entities the next, it just doesn't make sense. Sorry for those who dislike darker styles, or anything other then one style, so much so it prevents them being able to admit plain truth or from realising maybe they don't know about it as they aren't into this or that style, or looking to know, but they are not the only fans or artists or whatnot, and they still know it exists, even to call it crap means they must have heard of it..no one is going Technicality who? Or Therapy what's that? Or is Teebee a candy bar?...I hate Pop Idol but I don't act like it doesn't exist, or those horrible bright hip hop / new rave combo hoodies everyone's wearing. Its not my taste but if I had to put a collage of "trends of 2007/8"that shit would be in there like right in the middle! A pair of neon green Crocs to the left. But, seriously, not to sound in any way condescending, but I know from being an agent and worldwide promoter, its my job to know area;s and what I'm doing and what other people are doing, and numbers, and how things are going, and one night turn out versus another etc etc, and we, and thats a large blanket "we", are hardly struggling.
The entire scene, bar maybe one or two people every 5 or 6 years, is UNDERGROUND so arguing commercial versus underground as some people have is redundant, and also as said, plenty non jump up acts are just as, if not more popular then their colleagues..The Panacea versus TC in almost any european country will come out with Panacea being more known, higher drawer and higher paid act, or at least equal to the status's of pretty much everyone other then maybe Andy and Goldie. Tech Itch in Russia versus Clipz...Noisia or Teebee or Klute versus Lynx...come on..there are tons of examples. So yes, this is a Uk Drum and Bass awards, and still even for UK a poor excuse of an example..but mainly its annoying as once again, This divides us more...and it fails to show the complexity and diversity that has made this scene my life and love, and same with Dylan, and same to tons of other people, so of course we get upset and passionate. Its a huge, cherished, part of my life, not a cash cow. And at the end of the day, its better then how its being consistently portrayed. So yes, that bothers me immensely, not this as one instance or example in particular, but the habitualness of it LOL they are habitual scene underminers LOL hahahaha the overlying idea of it, its just over and done and I want to move on from this separatism one day!
Don't get me wrong, some people definitely should be there and are, and big ups, but the a lot is just laughable, and if you do something that retarded you should be prepared to get called out on it, and only retards would accept it and say nothing...especially on a forum about drum and bass with people, who of all people, should be in the know enough to put personal tastes aside and agree or recognise.
anyways, its just the same old doucheness, but would be nice for that to evolve finally after years and years....is it really that difficult?
