RAIDEN (UK)
Raiden a.k.a. Jarman has a background in music that combines tonal savagery and intricate grooves, his first public outings in the world of music were fronting a hardcore band in '94. Always a man on the look-out for new ideas, someone played him some No-U-turn tunes in '97, and suddenly everything changed, the bass was exchanged for the complex depths of Logic Audio, and the sound that defines him began to coalesce.
A year of careful listening and research, a small tour of German squat-party venues, and then in '98 he leapt straight into the relentless production schedule that is another one of his trademarks. Getting DJ slots by playing D'n'B sets at open-minded techno nights, he found he loved the timbres of techno, but couldn't shake his passion for a rolling break and conveyor belt basslines. He resolved to meld the two into a sound that growls like a crack-crazed pitbull, before sinking in its teeth with a grip that locks on and never lets go.
He studied at the I.M.T. in London for a year, and this led to a work placement at Airtight Studios, where he met DJs Friction & Nu:Balance, and began writing tunes for their label Transparent. The first of these was hugely sucessful Cenobyte E.P. featuring the crushing tune Bulldoze. Released at the end of 2002 and played by such luminaries as Trace, Bad Company, Kemal, Keaton, Technical Itch, Mampi Swift, Friction and Usual Suspects.
Renegade Hardware approached Raiden in mid 2002. His debut release Fallin' became a massive tune, being voted nr. 18 in the best tune awards of 2002 by Muzik Magazine. Fallin' was also featured on the cover CD of November 2002 Mixmag, which lead to wider exposure and more media attension. More epic cuts were planned for 2003, including All Out War followed by his debut Renegade Hardware E.P. featuring Infection, 6ft Ditch, Fallin' (Friction RMX) and React. Pitbull Attack and Mindboming as the launch release for TOV's new label Barcode as well as Pinball and a relentless remix of his own Bulldoze on Transparent. All recieving much support from some of the scenes biggest guns. He is also about launch is own label Off-Key Recordings to hoost his extremist brand of techno tinged funk.
Raidens ideal is progressive music with a beginning, middle and end, but retaining the off-key hooks, the ability to shock. The end result sounds a little (but not quite) like Axis remixing No-U-Turn (or vice versa); heavy rolling tech-step breaks, vicious synth head noises, and basslines that you could mistake for seismic events. His ascent though the scene has been an unprecedented success, this rise is far from over, you have been warned...!
GEIN (USA)
Gein, appropriately named after the Plainfield Wisconsin pyscho Edward Gein, consists of The Butcher (Weston formerly of Defiant), Abel (Habit Recordings) and Saint (founder of Habit Recordings). Shortly after Weston moved from L.A. to Milwaukee in early 2004, they met up and started making music together. With support from people like Dylan, Technical Itch, AK-1200, and Infiltrata, these three have been dropping heavy bombs on dancefloors worldwide.
With material released on Moving Shadow, Freak Recordings, Habit Recordings, and forthcoming stuff on Defcom, Tech Itch Rec. and a host of other hi-profile labels, their name will surely be a strong presence in D'n'B for a long time coming. Watch out for Gein in 2006 and beyond. They will be coming to kill dancefloors near you...!
KIARA (SK)
The Slovak D'n'B server dnb.sk covers the first Slovak female D'n'B DJ... Kiara! She got in touch with electronic music for the first time in 1993 when rave and dancefloor was most popular in Europe. She was amazed and excited by its speed and energy. Moreover, she heard her first D'n'B and Jungle tracks in the same time.
Passive listening was not enough for her, therefore, she wanted to try the position from the DJ side. But her biggest inspiration was the broadcasting of Clublab (most popular slovak radio show about electronic music) on the Fun Radio. At the end of the year 2001 she tried her gramophone and try to mix for the first time.
During her short career, she played at many small and big festivals or parties in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria and in Poland, where she played alongside lots of residents of those countries. Moreover, she played with DJs from bigger labels - Gridlok, Moving Fusion, Muffler, Ill.Skillz, Dope Amo, Aquasky and with very famous and popular locals like Shroombab, Pandora, Splinta, MC Davox and MC Terra from Austria - and with the Hungarian DJ Deckflash.
D'n'B represents a specific lifestyle for her, which fulfills her personality. Her sets are energetic and focused on dance parquet especially. She knows how to adapt for atmosphere in the party, therefore, she can be on the same frequency an audience. According to this atmosphere like, she chooses a particular music. Usualy she plays hard, dark D'n'B and Jungle. But in the right mood she knows how to play softer drums.
In early 2004 she had benn integrated into the Junglistic Sistaz network and in summer 2004 she was added to the Female:Pressure network. Among DJing and organizing parties, Kiara writes articles and shoots photos for the Slovak online-magazine dnb.sk...
