INTERVIEW with FORBIDDEN SOCIETY

Forbidden Society: „If I didn't produce drumandbass, I would love to play in metal band“

Questions and translation by: Kachni - kachni(at)drumandbass.cz

Drumandbass.cz - Forbidden Society promo interview

Hello! First of all, could you please introduce yourself and tell us how did you get into production of electronic music?

I am Jindrich Brejcha better known as Forbidden Society. I have been involved in electronic music for 13 years. I started producing breakcore and digital hardcore with my friend, we met together every Sunday at 7 am and then we made music in Fasttracker. We released our first vinyl on our own label called Hardliner Recordings in 1999. It was something like a compilation of people who were producing the same music style as we did. Actually, there weren’t many people involved in because this genre wasn't so popular that time. Later on I wanted to do music on my own, I saved up money and bought my first computer. I produced under the name Noize Punishment and I must admit I received a very good feedback. I played in Berlin at Fuckparade five times where music was performed from trucks and we also played in clubs. A tour in USA and Canada was also arranged but unfortunately I couldn't come due to visa issues - it was few months after 11th September 2001. I also worked with The Panacea that time, I think many people don't know I released his tune on our label, he remixed my track Demons under his project Rich Kid. I started to miss the right energy in digital hardcore and breakcore and the whole genre went the way I personally didn't like. That's why I completely dropped the project Noize Punishment and I started to produce drumandbass and I am producing it till now.

Apart from project Forbidden Society, you have another five ones. Do you have time for making tunes under the other aliases?

I can honestly say I am fully concentrated to project Forbidden Society right now. I have also left my job because it wasn't possible to manage it all. When I have time or I am in the mood for writing tune in another style I just do it but it is very occasionally.

List of my present and past projects:

Forbidden Society - hard drumandbass (present)

Pornothrasher - electro, house, experimental (present)

Noize Punishment - breakcore / digital hardcore (past)

Mental Output - the most extreme form of electronic music (past)

Desert Storm Breakcore Squad - breakcore / digital hardcore (past)

Unsane Virusez - drumandbass with MC (past)

You are in drumandbass scene for quite a long time. What were the most memorable moments that would you personally highlight?

There are lot of moments which deserve to be mentioned. But I would emphasize the situation when Justin from Counterstrike offered me to do collaboration with him. I think it was such a big act of kindness. He had been well-known producer that time so to do a collaboration with newcomer is definitely something what are producers careful about. But my production held his interest so we did tune called Extreme together. And the track really works! People recognize it at parties and it gets huge feedback everytime it drops. Another moment I would mention is when Dylan himself wrote me even before I sent him my tune Filth VIP. He said that my production impressed him and that he had already kept an eye on me. This was definitely another exciting moment for me.

How much time do you spend on production and how long does take you to finish a new track?

I spend lot of time on my production. As I have already mention, I quitted my job to do music full-time. But I don't write one track per day, I am trying to do my best because it is not easy to produce a track which is different and make you stand out from the crowd in a way that people want you to play it, labels want to release it and established djs want to have the particular track in their CD bags. I think almost all producers will agree with me. I started to concentrate more on quality of my sound, so I am spending lot of time with it too. Some respected names in drumandbass scene that play my tunes out told me that my sound is getting better and better. But I am still not completely satisfied, improving your own sound is never-ending story. As for producing tunes. In my opinion, is not good to return back to unfinished stuff again and again. It is better to capture original idea and then build it up properly. Well, everyone has his own process. Somebody could object this one is bullshit, anyway it is just my point of view.

How would you describe your own sound in few words?

Hard, agressive which don't let you breathe out! And I am trying to be clear at the same time.

The influence of metal is clearly noticeable in your sound. What metal bands do you like and why?

Metal is at least as important as drumandbass for me. If I didn't produce drumandbass, I would love to play in metal band. One of my most favourite band is Slayer. These guys (nearly grandfathers) have been playing the same extreme music for nearly 20 years. I really admire them. Their agressive music heavily influenced me when I was producing digital hardcore. I also like Motorhead and Megadeath. Last time Canadian band Ion Dissonace interested me. Their style is called deathcore and it is pretty hard and chaotic mixture of metal. I would also mention Haterbreed and I listen to punk especially crust like Krigshot aswell.

What are you currently working on and there are any forthcoming releases you want to mention?

My current list of forthcoming releases:

Despised / Attack the Beatiful (PRSPCT Recordings)
Facing Extinction (Current Value remix) (Algorythm Recordings)
Sad Truth (SPL remix) (Algorythm Recordings)
Anarchy feat. Lucio De Rimanez (Perkussiv)
Riotbringer / Forbidden Society & Switch Technique - Shelter (Future Sickness Recordings)
Filth VIP (Current Value remix) / Forbidden Society & Cooh - The Gord (Freak Recordings)
Forbidden Society & Katharsys - Symerian (Obscene Recordings)
Dstrctv Look / Forbidden Society vs DELTA 9 - Violent Outburst (Mask 05)
Can't Be Soft / Femme Fatale (Fall Out Recordings)
Katharsys - The Chain (Forbidden Society remix) (Tantrum Recordings)
Katharsys & Forbidden Society - Untitled (Yellow Stripe)
Forbidden Society - Intense (Nekrolog1k Recordings)
Ak-Industry, I:Gor & NeverQuiet - Nekrolog1k Anthem (Forbidden Society remix) (Nekrolog1k Recordings)
I am working on new smashing tunes with Katharsys, Thought, Cooh and DJ Hidden. And I did two collaborations with mighty Current Value that I am very happy about, these tracks are gonna kick your ass, believe me!

And what about your own album, did you think about it yet?

I did. Actually, I think it is not the right time to release my own album. I still need to work hard and carry on building my name. But I am planning it later on for sure. Another problem is current situation on the scene. The time is bad for labels. Tunes which were supposed to be released on vinyl is released as mp3. I have personal experience with that too, two of my tunes were going to be out on vinyl but they were released "only" digitally.

Autumn is nearly here and it means a return to clubs and time for more parties. What are your upcoming gigs?

I am plying in Czech Republic at Therapy Sessions Czech Republic on 22nd October and before that in club Fabric - Ostrava on 1st October. And then you can catch me abroad, I have confirmed gigs in Romania, Austria, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and so on. Check all my upcoming shows on MySpace, I update it regularly.

Last time you involved yourself in organizing parties. You together with Kenzo from Cross Club (Prague) bring big names from hard drumandbass scene to Czech Republic. How do you feel as a promoter and what next are you preparing for us?

You are right, I have jumped into that business. I am really enjoying this role of promoter. I must admit I am quite a perfectionist kind of person who care about things to be done properly. I suppose that each promoter should behave this way. I don’t boast about how superb promoter I am because I helped with two parties so far. But I reckon they both were successful. Thrasher - PRSPCT Recordings owner from the Netherlands was headliner of the first event. People enjoyed his set and he had a good time aswell. The second one I have been envolved in was party with Ukraine fatman Limewax. It was really great too. I think people also enjoy my sets in club Cross. There is fantastic atmosphere and I have my own fanbase which come and support me every time I play there. Next party I am co-organize with Kenzo is on 19th November and headliner is the one and only Current Value. Can’t wait for this genius because his performance at Therapy Sessions Manheim on 13th August was simply awsome!

Well, let’s talk about Therapy Sessions Vienna where you are playing on 18th September. Are you looking forward? What do you think about line-up and what can people expect from you there?

I am really looking forward! Could people want more at Therapy Sessions? Counterstrike, The Panacea, Bkey, me, what a great lineup!

People who are going to attend the party should prepare yourself for many new tracks which they have chance to hear only live at parties. So I guess it is definitely worth a visit and listen to all the new and fresh stuff, believe me!

You did a special Therapy Sessions Austria promo mix. Tell us something more about it.

The mix contains tunes I personally like. I tried to include a bit of everything - from dark, tech, exprimental to 4/4 and made it as interesting as possible. I really put much effort into selection and mix too. Nowadays people want to hear as much new stuff as possible in mixes so it is quite hard with that. Sometimes producers and even labels don't allow using dubplates in promo mixes. I don't play dubplates without artist's permission and everytime I ask them to make certain. In my opinion the final version of mix turn out very well. Proof of that could be reaching 2000 downloads in 7 days, that is pretty good.

Line-up of Therapy Sessions Czech Republic was announced few weeks ago. What would you people invite for this year?

I would definitely point out the French duo Katharsys. They are coming to Czech Republic for the first time and they will play a special b2b set. They are very talented producers, I can't imagine my sets without their tunes. There is no more to say about Limewax, it is a standard quality. He is releasing his new album in the autumn that many people are excited about. I spoke to Max few months ago and he said he played only 2 tracks from the LP. There aren’t any clips on the Internet yet, he tries to keep them secret and fresh. So this is something like an invitation to hear new tracks from Limewax‘s brand new album exclusively. Finally, I would like to invite people to my set which will be full of my new tunes and collaborations. There will be 2 floors this year. Techno, acid and dubstep will be on the second one. It is going to be even bigger than last year, stage design will also be on higher level. So it is definitely event what you should not miss!

Any final shout-outs you want to give?

First of all I thank you because you are helping me a lot with so many things like Youtube, various articles and you manage all the PR stuff for me, so thank you.

Then I would certainly want to thank all the people who like my music, to those who attend events where I am playing to listen my music and support me and to people who buy my tracks both on vinyl and mp3. I really appreciate it. And big up for promoters that book me for their events! I can’t forget to thank Kenzo from Cross club who I organize the events with for his help.

And finally big up for the first line in Cross club for helping me creating metal atmosphere. See you on 19th November in Cross and I wanna see proper metal there! I love my hellbringers!
